Training, Orientation & Tours at Summer School

Week 1 at Stanford

Summer school is off and running. At our Stanford University campus, a staff of almost 20, including 11 Resident Advisors are shepherding this year’s class of students through an exciting three weeks of learning and fun.

This year, JSA welcomes 119 students from across the U.S., several U.S. territories, and other countries to the Stanford University campus.

Students officially checked in on Sunday, July 2, but even before they arrived staff were already on site. Staff spent a week in training, led by Campus Program Director Steve Bayne, Dean of Students Yvonne England, and Staff Director Joey Zodiacal. This year’s group of Resident Advisors includes several JSA alumni. The Residents Advisors are: Alesha Gray, Alexandra Tikka, Taylor Van Den Berg, Marquina Hofschneider, Liz Litteral, Abeeha Shamshad, Gabe Mecham, Thomas Mangloña II, Jonas Patterson VI, and Bradley Davis. Some have also worked at previous JSA summer schools.

To kick off, the RAs put on a model debate for students as a sample for the faculty to use in class. The summer program also welcomed returning professors Dave Mezzera (Debate Workshop), Andi McClanahan (Debate Workshop), Stephen Magu (Honors International Relations), Joe Sery (Honors Speech and Political Communications), and Alan Gibson (A.P. U.S. Government). Professor Ann Werboff (A.P. Macroeconomics) joins JSA for the very first time.

Orientation

On orientation day, students introduced where they are from and their favorite political issue. Answers ranged from climate change and renewable energy to women’s rights and access to education. In the first week, students got acquainted with the campus by going on a library tour and walking to class together. Many of them formed group study sessions for midterm examinations and met with professors in preparation for their debate workshops next week.

Why Students Choose JSA Summer School

When asked why she decided to come to summer school, Charlie Dodge, JSA chapter president at Temple City High School in Southern California, said, “I wanted to experience life on a college campus…I wanted to experience a college class by a college professor in a field I am interested in such as Speech and Political Communication.

She added, “Being able to experience this is really beneficial as an incoming senior working on college applications and figuring out what I want to study and where to live.”
