Who Runs JSA? Our Students Do

Who Runs JSA? Our Students Do

Since 2006, the number of donors to our nonprofit programs has grown from just under 100 individuals to our lively and engaged network of over 1,200 today. Our donors make our programs possible. From providing disenfranchised communities with access to civic engagement programs to supporting scholarships that provide low-income youth with life-changing opportunities through our summer programs, every contribution to the Junior State makes a difference.

Our school year programs are often made accessible to students from all backgrounds through the efforts of their friends and peers. Though the Junior Statesmen Foundation offers scholarships to hundreds of students, our inspiring student fundraisers help by going the extra mile.

“I have so many friends who wouldn’t be able to go to a democratic convention because it’s too expensive, and I wanted them to get to experience them,” says Aastha Jha, one of our student fundraising directors. “For me JSA has really been really life-changing. I found my voice, and issues to care about.”

This year, we kickstarted our annual student crowdfunder in support of need-based scholarships for school year conventions—and in just a month and a half, our students raised $70,000 and exceeded their target for the entire year. “We’ve been reaching out to a broader range of people, friends and family. Our network has broadened a lot more and it’s been really amazing to see how much every donation has added to make an impact.” Jha, now a senior who has spent 3 years in JSA, adds, “Every donation is helping a child find a voice—bringing the next senator, or ringing in the next president. These are the future leaders of America.” It was an incredible feat that blew our development staff out of the water, and moved us deeply in how passionate and connected our students were to sharing their experience with others in their state.

la2050Most recently this year, we entered into our first grant competition with LA2050 through a partnership with Alliance College-Ready Public Schools.  Since 2013, JSA has worked with Alliance to bring our youth empowerment programs to low-income youth in the inner-city of Los Angeles, where Alliance schools have been able to graduate 94% of their students—an important achievement in areas where drop out factories are pervasive and financial insecurities are a real concern for many families. In the first couple of days of the campaign, our students and communities collected enough votes to spur us into the top ten of 78 entries.

Our students understand the value of letting every voice be heard—no democracy can function without the participation of every individual.  We’re especially fortunate for our student leaders and touched by their families and communities who believe in them.

Inspiring Student Raises nearly $3,500 to attend Princeton Summer School in 7 Days

Inspiring Student Raises nearly $3,500 to attend Princeton Summer School in 7 Days

The message on her fundraising page couldn’t be clearer: “THANK YOU SO MUCH! I AM GOING TO PRINCETON!” In just 7 days, Jazmin Vergara managed to raise nearly $3,500 to attend the JSA Summer School program at Princeton University.

After completing the JSA Fundraising Academy webinar, Jazmin got right to work. “I first began the fundraising challenge through my school since I had talked to teachers about the program. For the first three days a great majority of the teachers had helped me gain more donations for me by putting the link on their Facebook or Twitter. From there, I realized I can’t just rely on my school… So, I went ahead and sent e-mails to my local mayor, the city council, the board of education, and others,“ she says.

She also faced some struggles. A week after starting her campaign, no one had donated to her. So she decided to, in her words, “kick it up.” “I started going face-to-face to local businesses and telling them my story of how I found this program and how much it means it to me to be able to go and gave them the link [to my fundraising page]. Then, I decided to e-mail the local news outlet… and they responded gleefully and got a story about me out in one night. I also had the help of one of the Board of Education members who I had sent an e-mail to and had sent a new personal referral to about fifty of his friends in the community”

Her increased efforts paid off: “With the press, the city, and my family coming together I felt as if the link to my page was on a billboard! Within about the whole school day I had checked my e-mail and the donations just kept coming. By the end of the day at three o’clock, I got the e-mail saying that I had met what I needed. “

Jazmin also has some advice for other students looking to raise the money for summer school: “Do not be afraid to e-mail anyone and everyone. The more you get your name out there, the more people will want to become invested in you. Brag about yourself!“

JSA Fundraising Academies, which can help students learn how to put together a successful campaign to raise the funds need for summer school, as Jazmin did, are held on Tuesday (7pm ET) and Wednesday (6pm PT) evenings each week through May. To sign up, send an email to FundraisingAcademy@jsa.org with your name and which day you would like to attend Fundraising Academy.
